Apprentice/Journeyperson Ratio - Final Level Apprentices Excluded
The Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission Board adopted a policy of excluding final level apprentices from the calculation of journeyperson to apprentice ratios. This policy, which applies to all designated trades in Saskatchewan, was implemented last winter on a temporary basis, subject to regulation changes and a review of the results. The regulations were amended November 1, 2007 and will be in effect for one further year until November 1, 2008.
The purpose of this policy is to make room for more apprentices under the ratio provisions of our regulations, in order to increase enrolment in apprenticeship. Employers and people seeking apprenticeships in the skilled trades are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity presented by this change.
Please note that this change does not remove the employer’s obligation to supervise final level apprentices. It is expected that all apprentices will continue to experience high quality on-the-job training and that the work of the trades will continue to be performed in a manner that is safe for workers and the public.
Employers and apprentices who wish to take advantage of this new policy will be accommodated in the normal process of apprenticeship registration. Information about this policy and how it can be applied is available from field consultants throughout the province.
